Changing rural settlements - Knowle

The 'village' of Knowle has been included in the Birmingham conurbation as the larger city has 'sprawled' over time. It is now part of the county of the West Midlands.

The top left photograph the narrow, main thoroughfare through Knowle, it was not designed for the volume of traffic it now has to cope with.

Top right shows the attraction of the green, 'leafy', buit environment, with both established housing and new builds to choose from.

Left - shows a variety of retail function. The buildings are of differing ages with some evidence of in-filling. Some shops have been left vacant (To Let) due to competition from the out-of-town shopping centre on the rural-urban fringe - Junction 4 of the M42.
